There are normally two pressure washer types available. Direct driven or belt driven. Direct driven pumps are directly mounted to an electric motor or gas engine, whereas a belt driven unit is connected to the motor/engine with belts. Direct drive pumps normally run at higher rotational speeds than belt driven pumps. Direct drive units are usually more compact than belt drive units. Belt drive units have the option of changing the speed at which they rotate and this changes the volume they produce. Since belt drive unit will normally run at lower rotational speeds, they will almost always last longer then direct drive units.
